Warlord: Awaji Tier List Hub

Weapons in your hands versus the retinue that has to live beside them.

Tier List Hub

This hub is the ranking desk for Warlord: Awaji after the 9 September 2026 Steam launch. Darkmatter Games shipped a finished single-player campaign, so a letter grade here is not an esports patch. It is a claim about what actually wins a homestead fight, a shrine push, or a roadside ambush while you are standing in the same field as your people.

Two pages sit under this index, and they answer different questions. The weapons tier list ranks tachi, tanto, odachi, yari, naginata, and yumi by reach, recovery, and how often they get you killed in a crowd. The unit composition page ranks melee blocks, bow groups, cavalry, and the named retainers you promote with conquered land. Read both. A perfect spear still fails if the formation is a blob. A pretty formation still dies if everyone holds a short sword.

Launch-week caveat

Treat every grade as a snapshot, not a law. Patch vR101 moved the tutorial spawn, asked you to confirm the nearby homestead, tightened the 70 meter check, added a little starting stock, stripped leftover debug keys, and stopped the pause menu from leaking world time. It did not retune damage tables, horse charge, or arrow types. Launch-week Steam arguments will move these lists faster than any later number tweak.

If a clip calls odachi untouchable after one mansion fight, wait. If a spear snaps mid-charge, that is a leftover Next Fest rule (polearms can break instead of drop when stamina is gone), not proof that yari is dead. Come back after you have taken two homesteads and one shrine, then argue with field notes instead of a title-screen loadout.

Price and DLC do not change grades. The campaign sits around $24.99 with a short introductory discount, and a soundtrack DLC exists on Steam. Neither one adds a hidden weapon. Rankings follow what you can field in the live build, not what sat in a 2025 demo folder.

Weapons versus units

Weapons answer what is in your hands. Units answer who stands next to you. Warlord: Awaji makes you fight in the same view as the retinue, so those questions leak into each other.

  • Open combat if you still panic-slash. Rankings assume you can look at a target, strike, and block immediately.
  • Open army and formations if your people clump. Rankings assume a melee front, space for bows, and a lane for horses.
  • Open bow and cavalry before you grade yumi or mounted groups. Demo 2.0 already showed five arrow types, horseback AI, and a yabusame track; the live campaign keeps that kit.

Polearms usually beat a naked tachi because reach is free damage you do not have to earn with footwork. That does not make tachi junk. Thrusts (block then attack) and shots at the face, throat, or inner arm still drop armored men. Tanto is a backup for tents and interiors, not a field plan. Odachi hits hard and pays for it in recovery. Yumi is a unit problem as much as a weapon problem: ammunition switching and friendly lanes matter more than a letter.

On the unit side, named veterans with land-backed promotions outlast a pile of fresh recruits. Warrior monks belong to shrines and spiritual aura, which is a conquest issue, not a damage sheet. Cavalry is a hammer on open ground and a liability inside fences. Bows want a clear lane and a melee screen. If you only recruit swords because they look like samurai, the units page will still call that a weak army.

How to use these lists

  1. Finish the nearby homestead with the getting started flow so you are ranking live weapons, not tutorial props.
  2. Open the weapons list and pick one polearm upgrade before you spend land.
  3. Open the units list and split melee, bows, and cavalry in the drag-and-drop menu.
  4. Recheck patch notes when a tool feels weaker overnight, then the updates hub if you only need the short version.

Controls and camp building do not hand out letter grades, but they change whether a ranked loadout can exist. Radar and friend-or-foe highlights decide if you swing at the right sashimono. A camp that cannot feed or watch will starve an S-tier front line before the next hill.

This wiki is unofficial. Steam, Discord, and darkmattergames.com still own the numbers. We will move a grade when a patch or a repeatable field test demands it, not when a spawn point shifts or a soundtrack bundle goes on sale.

If you only click two links from here, make them the weapons tier list and unit composition. The rest of the wiki exists to keep those two pages honest while the first Steam weeks shake out.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for new warlords landing on Awaji.

How is this Warlord: Awaji tier list ranked?

Launch-week field results in the single-player campaign: reach, stamina, formation duty, and whether a tool still works after a crowd closes. It is not a PvP ladder.

Should I open weapons or units first?

Open the weapons tier list if you keep dying in melee. Open unit composition if the retinue collapses while you are still standing.

Did patch vR101 change weapon grades?

No. vR101 is a tutorial and pause-clock pass. Recheck patch notes when a later Steam news post actually touches damage or AI.

Why warn that the meta will move?

The game launched on 9 September 2026. First-week player reports will outrun any static letter grade. This hub is a starting map, not a frozen bible.
